Many of the historical sites of Zanzibar are actually located in the Stone Town, the older section of the island where travelers who spend their holidays in Tanzania would explore walking around the old streets and lanes.
- The House of the Wonders
This striking building is among the most popular places in the Stone Town. It hosts the Zanzibar National Museum of History and Culture that is often visited by many travelers who tour Tanzania.
Constructed in 1883 by Sultan Barghash, the building was the target of many British bombardments in 1896 to force the son of Barghash; Sultan Hamoud to surrender to the British forces. However, he remained in the palace and made his residence until his death. Today, the building hosts large numbers of tourists who love to spend their holidays in Tanzania.
The building is quite remarkable itself. It is said that its massive doors are the largest and most impressive in the whole region of Eastern Africa. The outline and the design of the building is a marvelous blend between the English and the Swahili styles. Many travelers who tour Tanzania are fond of the African culture and architecture.
- The Palace Museum
Formerly known as Beit El Sahel, the Palace Museum was the royal residence of the Sultan of Zanzibar until 1964 until the whole regime was overthrown. Afterwards, the building was transformed into an interesting museum that travelers who spend their vacation in Tanzania would enjoy.
The displays of the first floor of the museum have some interesting displays demonstrating the sultanate period. In this period, the Tanzanian authorities signed many commercial treaties with the United States in 1833, Britain in 1839, and France in 1844. This is in addition to a section dedicated to Princess Salme, who was a member of the royal family of Zanzibar and eloped escaped with her German lover. This is among the most interesting sections of the museum explored by many tourists who spend their vacations in Tanzania.
The focus of the second floor is the modernization of Zanzibar that took place in the middle of the 19th century where pipelines water and electricity was introduced in the island. The third and last floor is still the living section of the last Sultan of Zanzibar. This is quite remarkable as well as it serves as a live example of the designs and architecture of that period of time that grab the attention of many travelers touring Tanzania.
- The Old Fort
Located near the House of Wonders, the Old Fort is an impressive structure that was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century. During the past few decades, this old fort has been renovated and restored to become the culture center of Zanzibar and the offices of the film festival of Zanzibar as well. Some tourists would like to add such places to their travel packages to Tanzania to get to know and taste the culture of the region.
The cultural center also hosts many musical and the dance performances that attract travelers who tour Tanzania, especially that their music and culture in general is quite distinctive and interesting.
- The Anglican Cathedral and the Old Slaves Market
Built in the 1870s, the Anglican Cathedral was constructed by the Universities Mission to Central Africa. This imposing structure was built on the ruins of the old slaves market. This is another site that welcomes a number of travelers who spend their vacations on Tanzania.
